PRESS RELEASE

Launch of the fourth Generation €uro Students’ Award competition

30 September 2014

EMBARGO

Transmission embargo until 12 CET on Tuesday, 30 September 2014
  • The Generation €uro Students’ Award is a competition open to secondary school students in the euro area which involves a monetary policy simulation exercise.
  • The fourth edition of this competition will be launched on Wednesday, 1 October and will cover the academic year 2014/15.
  • The competition is a joint initiative of the European Central Bank (ECB) and 11 national central banks (NCBs) of countries in the euro area.

The fourth edition of the Generation €uro Students’ Award – a competition for secondary school students resident in the euro area – will be launched tomorrow by the ECB, working in conjunction with 11 national central banks of countries (Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Luxembourg, Austria, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia and Finland) in the euro area. The NCBs organise competitions at the national level, while the ECB runs a competition for European and international schools.

Students aged between 16 and 19 years will learn about monetary policy by conducting a real-time exercise which simulates an ECB interest rate decision. They compete in three separate rounds ‒ involving an online quiz, an essay and a presentation ‒ throughout the academic year 2014/15, culminating in a European award event at the ECB’s premises in Frankfurt am Main. ECB President Mario Draghi, accompanied by the governors of the relevant national central banks, will present an award to the winning teams.

First launched in 2011, the Generation €uro Students’ Award competition reaches more than 10,000 secondary schools in the euro area.

As one teacher from the winning school of the 2013/14 European and International School competition has said: “The Generation €uro Students’ Award has been a great success and the success is growing as the word spreads. For the students, participating in the final is a memorable experience and they are able to make good use of it in university applications”, Shaun Riordan, International College Spain.

Further information about the competition (including on how to register) is available at www.generationeuro.eu or can be requested by writing to generationeuro@ecb.europa.eu.
